Ever since iPhone made their debut back in the mid-2000's they've been the most sought after phones on the market. Apple is always coming up with ways to improve iPhone models year after year.
Let’s take a look at two of the best phones on the market today, the iPhone 6s Plus and the iPhone 7 Plus. Back in 2016 both of these phones were new on the market and the questions every year is whether or not to upgrade.
Apple decides around September of each year, to debut a new iPhone model. Usually, the s series comes in between each new generation. Is there enough of a difference to choose the iPhone 6s Plus over the iPhone 7 Plus?
The thing about Apple is that they often times leave many similarities between one generation of iPhone to the next. Deciding the winner between the iPhone 6s Plus vs. iPhone 7 Plus really depends on how much stays the same between the two models.
When looking at both of these phones side by side, you'll find they look pretty similar. They both have the same design with the home button at the bottom of the phone on the front screen.
Their cameras are in the same place, located on the back of the phone to the right. They both have a great front facing camera's and come in the same colors.
The color options include black, gold, and silver. The power buttons are in the same spot as well as the volume keys on the outside of the devices.
Even though the two models are nearly identical, Apple did make some critical changes to the technology incorporated in the iPhone 7 Plus.
The iPhone 6s Plus runs on the Apple A9 chip with a 1.84 dual-core processor. The iPhone 7 Plus, on the other hand, runs on the A10 chip with 3 GB of ram.
These differences in the hardware device mean the iPhone 7 Plus runs just a bit faster than the 6s Plus. Storage features are also a key difference.
The change in storage space may have been the biggest difference between the iPhone 6s Plus vs. iPhone 7 Plus. iPhone lovers know that any phone before the 7 Plus featured storage options in 16, 64 and 128 GB.
With the iPhone 7 Plus came new options to choose from. These options include 32, 128 and 256 GB options. This is huge since most iPhone users house loads of data and pictures on their phone.
Apple doesn’t give the options of removable storage space so it’s good they increased the storage in the iPhone 7 Plus.
One of the most notable differences is the fact the iPhone 7 Plus gets rid of the headphone jack and instead uses the apple adapter for apple headphones. Some see this as a negative point since it stops consumers from using other brands of earbuds.
The one difference in color options was the fact the iPhone 7 Plus discontinued the use of space grey.
There are a few features that everyone looks forward to when the iPhone comes out. These features include the camera(s), battery life, screen resolution, water resistance and durability.
Let's take a look at how the iPhone 6s Plus vs. iPhone 7 Plus holds up against each other in these key areas.
The iPhone 6s Plus has a 12-megapixel camera in the rear and a 5-megapixel camera on the front of the phone just above the screen.
The 7 Plus, on the other hand, comes with a dual 12-megapixel camera which has sensors attached as well. The front camera is 7 megapixels on the front so this difference in cameras is pretty huge.
Front cameras are best used for selfies, and pictures of that nature while the rear-facing camera has been optimized for portraits. iPhone has always been known to create awesome cameras.
The iPhone 7 Plus has a battery life which is 1 hour longer than the battery life on the 6s. This isn’t a huge difference but it’s an upgrade none the less.
iPhone 7 Plus users can talk on the phone up to 3 hours longer, and the internet will last an hour longer on iPhone 7 Plus as well.
Both batteries are rechargeable and non-removable which is something Apple will probably never change.
For heavy usage at work or school, you may need to bring the charger with you no matter if you have the iPhone 6s Plus or the iPhone 7 Plus.
Of course, you can always purchase a charging case. These allow you to charge the phone while at work, without all the hassle of bringing an actual charger.
There isn’t much of a noticeable difference in the iPhone 6s plus vs. iPhone 7 Plus screens. We’ll give you the data and metrics of each phone anyway.
The iPhone 6s Plus comes with a 5.5-inch screen just like the 7 Plus. The 6s Plus also has 1920x1080 pixels and the same screen to body ratio as the iPhone 7 Plus.
These are both LED back-lit displays which means they perform at their brightest settings. The main difference between the two models is the fact iPhone 7 Plus is 25% brighter than the iPhone 6s Plus.
So, what do these numbers really mean? Does it make a difference on the phone? The answer is yet it makes a slight difference.
Users can tell the iPhone 7 Plus is brighter than the 6s Plus. You’ll have to decide if that’s a determining factor on whether or not you upgrade.
Unless you’re outside a lot, and the low lighting on the 6s Plus really bothers you, then you probably won’t mind keeping the 6s Plus for another year to get the 7s Plus.
Water Resistance and Durability
The iPhone 7 Plus is more water resistant than the 6s Plus. We know this because the 6s can be splashed with water and work still but the 7 Plus can be submerged for 30 minutes under water and it will still work.
This doesn’t mean you should go swimming with the iPhone 7 Plus. It’s just an extra precaution to protect the phone.
One issue most iPhone users see repeatedly with iPhones is the glass screen. iPhone screens crack very easily so they’re known for not being very durable.
Overall the only difference in durability between the two phones is the water resistance. They’re both made with the same glass and to be on the safe side, you should purchase a sturdy case for either phone.
Since storage options change drastically between the two phones the price difference does as well. The 16GB iPhone 6s Plus is sold for $750, 64 GB is sold for $850, and the 128 GB is sold for $950.
The iPhone 7 Plus starts at $769 for the 32 GB, $869 for 128 GB and $969 for 256 GB option. These prices reflect the extra storage space available for the iPhone 7 Plus.
These prices are pretty standard for iPhone. Their pricing is almost always based on how much storage is included. Other smartphone companies market their products the same way.
If storage is something that’s absolutely necessary you probably won't mind paying a little extra for the 128 GB option. With the new storage space options, many consumers find that 32 GB will be just enough for their everyday usage.
People who had the iPhone 6s and were deciding on whether or not they should upgrade usually decided to keep the 6s Plus instead of buying the 7 Plus.
Consumers thought there wasn’t much of a difference between the two models. Especially since they came out within months of each other.
This is one of the largest complaints. iPhone users have been waiting for Apple to release an iPhone with a different design for years. Ever since the very first iPhone came out years ago, there hasn’t been much of a difference in the design.
The home button is still in the same place, as well as the power button and volume keys.
Those who did choose the iPhone 7 Plus usually had an older iPhone version which is what made them make the trade. Across the board both phones have great reviews and customers seem to be satisfied with either one.
What We Think
So, you want to know which one is better? iPhone 6s Plus or iPhone 7 Plus. When it comes down to it the iPhone 7 Plus has better functions even though there isn’t a huge difference between the two.
Remember if you need a headphone jack you may want to stick with the iPhone 6s Plus. The headphone jack on the iPhone 7 Plus is completely gone.
You’ll need special Apple headphones to listen to music or audio on the 7 Plus. These come in the packaging with the iPhone 7 Plus after purchasing it brand new.
Another difference is the camera. The iPhone 7 Plus has better cameras on both the front and rear of the phone.
When it comes down to it the iPhone 7 Plus upgrade isn’t worth it unless you have a model older than the 6s. Unless you have a dire need for more storage then it’s unnecessary to spend extra money on the 7 Plus.
Which Camera is Better?
This section is dedicated completely to the cameras on both devices. Who has the best camera between the iPhone 6s Plus vs. iPhone 7 Plus?
There’s a clear winner here. The 7 Plus has the better camera. You get more megapixels on both the front and rear side cameras. That means your pictures will turn out more precise and clear.
With the iPhone 7 Plus, consumers also get a quicker shutter speed, images with more color, and better low light performance. The real question is whether these differences matter to you as a consumer.
When paired against the iPhone 7 Plus the iPhone 6s Plus camera simply can’t compete. Photos turn out brighter, clearer, more precise and the screen you’re viewing them on is better too.
It’s not surprising to know the flash on the 7 Plus works better as well. Each time iPhone comes out with a new model you can always expect the camera to be upgraded and better than the last.
