Apple ID Tips On How to Delete – Step By Step Guide

Apple devices are more than just a phone, and as such they have much more than a few contact numbers. They are a gateway to a wide host of information and data that you have stored and downloaded.

Furthermore, Apple IDs are linked to our bank accounts. Although the security measure in place should protect any unauthorized users from making purchases on your behalf, there is always an element of chance.

Whatever the reason may be, there may come a time when you wish to delete your Apple ID. In this article, we’ll go through several stages that detail how to:

  • Deactivate devices
  • Deauthorize an Apple ID on various devices
  • Sign out from all devices
  • Delete Apple ID

Recent updates by Apple have come in the form of their new Data and Privacy Portal. This allows users to request any changes to their data sharing agreement.

It’s through this portal that we can take the actions above, including requesting to delete Apple ID.


Removing Devices Associated With An Apple ID

First and foremost, we must start off by removing the devices that are linked to your Apple ID.

This step is important because later in the process you will need to sign in using a new Apple ID. Also, by removing associated devices, you can then use those devices without any Apple ID.

To do this, go online and visit the Apple website, navigating to the Manage your Apple ID page.

This can be done on a desktop computer, laptop, or on any iOS device.

Removing Associated Devices On The Web

This can be performed from any computer, Windows or Mac.

  1. First, visit the URL appleid.apple.com, and then log-in using your Apple ID.
  2. You may be prompted to enter a two-factor authentication code. If requested, enter it to continue.
  3. Once you are logged in, scroll down the page to locate the Devices section.
  4. Select the Device you wish to remove from your Apple ID, and then click Remove.
  5. Confirm by clicking Remove this [Device].
  6. Repeat steps #4 and #5 for each one of your devices that you wish to remove.



Remove Associated Devices On iOS

If you don’t have access to a desktop computer or laptop, don’t worry. You can always remove devices associated with your Apple ID right from any iOS device.

  1. Launch the Settings application on the iOS device.
  2. Navigate to the top of the main screen in Settings and tap the Apple ID banner.
  3. Scroll down until you locate the section with Apple devices.
  4. Select a Device.
  5. Select Remove From Account.
  6. Confirm by selecting Remove.

Disable the Find My iPhone Function

The next step that you want to do is disable the ‘Find my iPhone’ function. In addition to iPhones, any iOS device can have this same function, such as ‘Find my Mac’ or ‘Find my iPad’ etc.

Should any of the devices go missing, you can use this find function to perform several actions, including:

  • Lock the device so it cannot be used by anyone
  • Erase the data on the device
  • Locate the device

Any devices that have this function enabled are currently associated with an Apple ID. When you want to delete the Apple ID, you will need to disable this function on all associated devices.

Here is how you can disable the Find function:


Disable Find My Mac

To disable the ‘Find My Mac’ function, you need to perform the following steps on a Mac desktop computer or laptop.

  1. Launch the System Preferences option.
  2. Click on iCloud.
  3. Scroll down the page to locate the Find My Mac option.
  4. Click on the checkbox to disable the Find My Mac function.
  5. You will be prompted for your Apple ID password. Enter it, then confirm by clicking Continue.

Disable Find My iPhone/iPad

To disable the ‘Find My iPhone’ function, or the ‘Find My iPad’ function, you must perform the following steps on the relevant device.

  1. Launch Settings application.
  2. Navigate to the top of the main screen in Settings and tap the Apple ID banner.
  3. Tap on iCloud.
  4. Scroll down until you locate the Find My iPhone option. Tap it.
  5. Toggle off the Find My iPhone function.
  6. Enter the Apple ID password, then confirm by tapping Turn Off.

After removing all associated devices from the Apple ID, and also disabling the Find function on all devices, you now need to make sure you are signed out of the Apple ID on all things.


Deauthorize your Apple ID on iTunes for Mac

Apple has a limited on the number of devices you can authorize for access to your iTunes library. By deauthorizing a device, you free a spot for any new device, computer or Apple ID.

  1. Launch iTunes on your Mac.
  2. Navigate to the Mac menu bar and click on Account.
  3. Select Authorizations, then click Deauthorize This Computer.
  4. Enter the Apple ID password, then confirm by clicking on Deauthorize.

Sign Out Of The Apple ID Account On Mac

Next, we'll show you how to sign out of your Apple ID account on a Mac.

  1. First, launch the System Preferences.
  2. Click on iCloud.
  3. Click on Sign Out, which is located in the bottom-left corner of iCloud preferences.
  4. You can opt to Keep a Copy of the iCloud data on your Mac. If you don’t wish to do this, simply deselect all data categories, then click on Continue.



Sign out of your Apple ID account on iOS

The last thing to sign out of is your Apple ID. This needs to be done on all iOS devices, such as your iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. The process is the same. Just follow these steps:

  1. Launch the Settings application.
  2. Tap on the Apple ID banner, located at the top of the Settings main screen.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and then tap Sign Out.
  4. Enter the Apple ID password to confirm.



How to Delete your Apple ID?

After performing all the above actions, you will have:

  • Removing all devices associated with the Apple ID
  • Disabled the Find function for all devices, including your Mac, iPhone, iPad etc.
  • Deauthorized the devices on your iTunes library
  • Signed out of the Apple ID with your Mac
  • Signed out of the Apple ID on all iOS devices

The last step is to finally delete the Apple ID completely. This is done through Apple's data and privacy portal.

You can finally delete the Apple ID by following the process below:

  1. Visit the Apple Data and Privacy portal online at privacy.apple.com.
  2. Log in to the portal using your Apple ID and password.
  3. If you are prompted, enter the two-factor authentication code.
  4. Click on Continue.
  5. Click on Get started, which is located beneath the section titled Delete your account.
  6. Review all the information that pertains to deleting your account.
  7. Apple will have to verify any requests for deletion, and they will inform you that the process may take a maximum of seven days to fully complete.
  8. Follow the recommended steps prior to deleting your account. (These will include some of the steps already discussed, such as backing up your data, signing out of devices, etc.)
  9. Select a reason for the deletion of your account by opening the pull-down menu.
  10. Click on Continue.
  11. Once again, review all the information that pertains to deleting your account.
  12. Click on Continue.
  13. Review the Deletion Terms & Conditions, then select the checkbox to confirm that you have read the conditions and agree with them.
  14. Click on Continue.
  15. Select a contact method to be used to receive any updates on the account status.
  16. Click on Continue.
  17. You will be given a unique access code. Write it down or print it out.
  18. This code will be requested in future so Apple Support can verify your identity if you ever need their assistance.
  19. The access code can also be used in the event that you wish to cancel the Apple ID account deletion process.
  20. Enter your access code in order to confirm you have recorded it for safekeeping.
  21. Click on Continue.
  22. Click on Delete account to delete Apple ID, which will erase your account and all associated data.



After you Delete the Apple ID

When you completed the process above, Apple will start a verification process. This can take anything up to seven days before it is complete, and your Apple account will still remain active throughout this period.

During this period, if you visit the Apple Data and Privacy portal through the account that is up for deletion, you will get a notification on the right-hand side of the site.

This notification will inform you that the account is going to be deleted.

If you wish to cancel the process and keep the account, you can contact Apple Support and provide them with the access code to stop the deletion process.
